Persian handmade carpet is woven into three main forms of Toranj, Kheshti and Afshan. Toranj has a lot of fans compared to the rest of the designs, and most of the carpets in Iranian homes are Toranj design. Toranj has wide margins in the sides of rug and has circles and ellipses in the middle of it. this design is inspired by the architecture of the Parthian period in handmade carpets.

One of the most important features of a brilliant handmade carpet is the flexibility of piles. When shopping for handmade carpets, make sure that the color of the surface piles of the handmade carpet is not different from the end of the piles.

because the difference in colors means that they have painted the rug with ink and the paint may be spread across the rug when you wash your carpet.  If carpet piles are rough, the cleaning of carpet is harder.

The advantage of handmade carpets to other flooring is that the use of wool and silk and cotton as raw material in it does not produce static electricity in the carpet, which is one of the best features of handwoven carpets.
Provide physical health of handmade carpets

physical health by using handmade carpets

Handmade carpets will help to provide physical health and will not cause any sensitivity because Persian rugs has been made by natural wool and its material has been taken from nature, but in machine made carpet is made of synthetic that is dangerous for asthma patients because it causes allergies.  Children, especially babies are highly vulnerable to chemical and synthetic materials, so it’s harmful for children to use machine made carpets.

What should be considered when buying Persian rugs

Although carpet has been used in many homes for many years, but when purchasing this Persian art, there are some tips to avoid be regretted after buying.

Persian rugs are one of the products found in most homes. It is said that a home without rug is a non sensible house. but when buying a perfect handmade Persian rug, we have to follow some rules to be satisfied.

in a carpet you may see a difference of a few centimeters in the dimensions of the carpet in the upper and lower parts of it. But this is not a defect for it and it is one of the characteristics of the carpet.
but if it is seen in small rugs, it is more obvious and you can fold the rug at middle of it to help you to be assured of its symmetry.

You should also notice the symmetry of color in the symmetrical parts and be sure to check it in normal light; note that the color of the carpet in one direction is darker than the opposite side.
Be sure to check that the shapes and geometry of the designs on the rug are not unfinished.

If the color at the end of pile is different from the surface of it, it is an indication that they are painted with ink and the ink may be spread across the rug when you wash it.

You should know that carpets that have rough piles are cleaned more difficult , so remember that a good carpet should have brilliant and flexible piles.

Another important point is that before you buy a carpet, you need to consider some tips such as the type of flooring, the size of your area, lighting, the color of the walls, the color of  your furniture and curtains, how much busy your environment is  , and the style of your home.

Remember that for areas with small area, choose a light color rugs.  Also, choose Afshan design because it is more suitable for these types of spaces, but never choose a Kheshti design, because it shows you small home smaller. Also, if your room does not have enough light, choose a carpet with a bright color.  The brighter the carpet, the brighter the space.

It should not be forgotten that when choosing the color of the carpet take care of the color of your space, including the color of the walls, furniture , curtains, and even the color of wood in your home, and, most importantly, the color of the flooring should be taken into consideration.  If there is a wall, a floor, or a stylish furniture with complex designs in your room, choose a carpet with a solitude layout to maintain a balance of design on the floor.  Gabbeh is the best choice for colorful and busy environments.

for busy spaces such as the living room or the entrance of the house, light carpets with elegant texture are not suitable.  Such carpets are more vulnerable to these areas.  Also before you buy a rug, consider style of your house which is traditional or modern.  For example, if your home is a parquet flooring, Gabbeh is more beautiful on it, but for more traditional spaces, a rug with Medallion design is more suitable.

Another point is that you should pay attention to the defects of  Persian rugs when you are going to buy a carpet.

*** There is a problem in the design of carpet

This defect is due to the complexity of the design,  non-authentic design and color, the solitude of the design, bad color distribution, not to use different color contrasts and not to respect the opinion of customers.

*** curvature in sides of handmade carpets

This is due to the thickening of the weft, the stiffening of knotting, the stiffness of the warp, the distance between the warp, the irregular spreading of the warps at the time of dismounting.

 ***  having abrash

Having abrash is caused by The irregularity of wefts when weaving the rug, the difference in raw materials of rug, the twisting of the tissue, and the direct sunlight exposure to the part of the woven carpet.

***  size of the margins are not the same

The issue is due to bad dismounting, flattening.

** Carpet color is different in same colors

Handmade carpet color problem is caused because of color of the carpet’s raw garn is different and the difference in the wool in terms of type, the use of poor wool, the excessive mounting of the carpet, the lack of proper dying of the wool so that its color is not spread completely, the use of non standard dyes when dying and drying.

Nain Persian Rugs

Nain persian rugs are one of the most famous Persian rugs. We will discuss it now .

History of Nain Persian rugs

Between 1900 to 1909 in Nain city of Iran, a man named Mirza Jalal Khan Pirzadeh set up carpet weaving classes for the support of students who could not afford their livelihood needs after graduation due to high rate of unemployment. For this reason, he requested help from the experts of the Naini carpet weaving named Mirza Hassan and Mirza Javad Sajjadi, and they taught to people who desired to learn Persian rugs weaving for two years in the first workshop of Nain city.

Shortly thereafter, Hajj Mullah Qasim Sadeqi established another Naini Persian rugs workshop in the Cheheldokhtaran in Nain city. In this workshop, people like the Habibian brothers inspired by the nature of the desert and rich culture of the region, as well as inspired by the Safavid era, began producing carpets.  They made new and unique designs that were welcomed by everyone.  Since the income level of the carpet weaving industry in these areas grew significantly, it did not take long for this art to flourish.

Familiarity with Nain Persian rugs Structure

As we said, one of the most important features of Nain carpet is its high quality and elegant texture, which has made it famous as a precious artistic product in global markets.  Wool and raw garn which is used in the texture of these carpets, is new and pure and can even be said to have higher standards than Iranian wool.  Typically, the Nain carpet is considered to use of non-Iranian wool that is rare in Persian rugs. The structure of Nain carpet is in away that has two-weft.  These carpets are very precise in terms of texture, so that the defects of the texture, such as c bristle, twisted, multi-colored, and wrong weaving‌ are very rare.

Nain carpets are woven with Serreh knots and their number varies from 300,000 to 1 million knots per square meter.  In Nain Persian rugs, unlike carpets that are woven as decorative carpets and generally have a special beauty, Nain carpets used for household use have a tight structure and have long life.

The looms in Nain Persian carpets

In the past, Nain carpet looms were made up of wood , while metalware is nowadays more widely used.  The method of installation and the method of warp winding and also carpet dismounting in the Nain area are very similar to the cities such as Isfahan and Kashan. In the case of Nain, the special experts do this work because they have the skill and experience to do this job.

Colors of Nain carpet

One of the characteristics of the Nain carpet identity is its color. The carpets are generally dyed by natural and herbal colors produced by the skilled Nain color makers.
The type of dyes of Nain carpet is in a way that can be completely distinguished from carpets of other parts of Iran. They have beautiful and gentle colors, and these are their prominent features.  The main dyes of Nain are bright and vague , which is accompanied by a dense, full of traditional curves in their design.

As mentioned above, one of the special features of Nain carpet is the use of traditional and natural colors in their dyes.  Nain Persian rug dyeing is not much different from other carpet weaving centers. It should be noted that, despite the use of chemical dyes in Nain, the use of natural colors is still dominant.  In general, Nain carpet uses 11 primary colors.

 The main colors are:

Cream , light and strong Khaki, strong brown, azure, blue ,  Light blue, red and grey.

Sub-colors also include:

 Green, Green, coppery and Pink.

How colors are used in Nain carpet designs

The variation of colors in Nain rug is very high, but in general, beige or Strong Khaki  is mainly used in designs.  light beige color is used in the frieze and edges.  For backdrop of carpet, the main dye used is cream, sometimes designs are bright blue or dark blue.

Common and popular designs in Nain carpets

It can be said that the main designs used in the Nain Persian rugs are the well-known and unique designs of Shah Abbasi, Lechak Medallion and in general, the designs associated with the most traditional Persian ones. Much of the unique identity of Nain carpet is due to its traditional designs, with its special dyeing.

About the special designs in Nain carpet, we can mention the design of Dome (roof), Haj khanoomi, Tree, Ghab, Mahrabi, straipped, Afshan, Latch toranj and historical.
Nain Persian carpet manufacturers have been producing and supplying runners, circles, hexagons carpets in recent years to provide more diverse products to the market.

Another basic characteristic of carpet weavers is their reluctance to weave face of humans.  One of the reasons that we can not see face of humans in the design  of Nain carpets is the need for a very high colorful variety of dyes, while the composition of Nain carpet has a particular limit.

Current position of Nain Persian rugs

Nowadays, Nain Persian rugs are produced and distributed throughout Iran and in many cities.  Nowadays, Nain rug manufacturers have been training people in other parts of the country because of cheap labor use, so now many areas are producing carpets with Nain Persian rugs.  Fortunately, the demand for Nain rugs in Iran is high and can even be said it is in the first rank.
Although mass production of Nain carpets in Iran has caused the supply of this product exceeds the demand.

Tabriz Persian Rugs

Tabriz rug is one of the Persian rugs.  This carpet is woven in Tabriz.  It is one of the most important centers of carpet weaving in Iran, and its carpets are of great variety and quality.

Tabriz Carpet History

Regarding the history of carpet in Tabriz, it can be said that due to its historical antiquity, the art of carpet weaving in the city certainly goes back to the Safavid era.  In the second half of the fifteenth century and in the Safavid era, carpet became an advanced and royal art from a rural art.  Another important development in the carpet of this period was the designs created by the Tabriz and Herat city artists.  In Ian Bennet’s book Rugs and Carpet of the World we face another theory about Tabriz carpets in the Safavid era, which we quote it as: “Many of the medallion carpets that were knotted in the early years of the 6th century during the reign of King Ismail the first and Shah Tahmasb have Eslimi and animal and human figures. “In this book, the author has attempted to connect Tabriz workshops with a number of carpets found in museums around the world in the first half of the 16th century.  Afterwards, Iranian carpets were exported abroad, and for this reason Tabriz craftsmen found out the taste of the European and American people, and started to weave carpets that were very interesting and dominated western countries.
Tabriz, one of the weaving centers of  Iran is very important in carpet weaving.
Its carpets decorated prestigious museums around the world or housed in a collection of collectors, or are exported in large-scale and commercial-quality.

They are always welcomed and customer-friendly.  According to the statistics we have, in the city of Tabriz and its suburbs, 32150 workers have worked on 16000 carpet looms in the year 1986.  In addition to single workers, many workshops have been involved in carpet weaving for many years.
In recent years, Tabrizi rug handmade weavers have begun to produce very delicate silk carpets with 365 Kpsi to 470 kpsi.  Carpets, some of which are silk, are mostly woven with Medallion design and often light beige and cream colors are used in them, and the color of flowers are red, green and magenta.  Tabriz carpets in the last seventy years are often woven with designs of vase, tree, Mehrabi, Ghandildar, animal figures, hunting scenes , Herat, Kheshti, landscape, frame and geometric designs from the smallest to largest sizes.  Tabriz weavers do not weave runners. Currently, Tabriz is known as the major supply center of carpets in Azerbaijan province and has become a major center of renowned producers. Tabriz weaving centers are very important for carpet industry in Iran.

Designs of Tabriz Persian rug

Well-known designs of Tabriz rugs include: Mustofi, Medallion, Eslimi, fish or herat, pot, Minakhan, tree plan, hunting scene , Novinfar , Salari, Faraj Mehran, Khatibi  Mirzaee , Moje mehr , Zavar, Beheshti , Khiabani Plan, Haj Mohammad Fathi, El Emadi Plan (Fathi Plan), Shadkam , Antiquities , Zabihi.

Characteristics of Tabriz rugs

Common feature of all Tabriz carpets is the Turkish knot.  The carpet weaving type of rural and nomadic carpets of Tabriz, especially in the old carpets, is mainly in the famous Persian style, in other words, they use thick knots for carpet weaving.  The Kpsi of rural carpets in Tabriz is generally limited to 29 to 35.  The looms  used in Tabriz, except nomadic carpets, are all vertical.  The most important dimensions of the new urban Tabriz carpets are 3 * 2 and 3/5 * 2/5 and as well as 3 * 4. Smaller dimensions are often found in old carpets.  Circle and polygon shapes have also become popular in recent years.  The number of Kpsi of Tabriz carpets usually starts from  29 and continues up to 1529.  The Kpsi, referred to as the knot density unit, is the best way to evaluate the quality of a rug; the higher the number of Kpsi in a rug, the better its quality.  Fine carpets are usually woven from silk or cotton yarn.

Tabriz is one of the largest and most important carpet weaving centers in Iran and worldwide and plays an important role in the development of decorative and tradition arts.

The top period of Tabriz rug art was from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries.

Formation of Tabriz rug art with the simultaneous integration of Iranian weaving and painting arts happened over the period  of six centuries.

Handmade carpet is the only flooring that does not lose its value and beauty because of various factors such as light, excessive use and washing but it becomes more valuable.  If you want to purchase a carpet that you want to find it appropriate and be satisfied in any way,
It is best to be careful when buying the carpet you want.
that’s why it’s good to know and study different types of Persian handmade carpets, and know how to recognize a good high quality rug from poor carpet.

Handmade carpets because natural fibers are used in them,  have a special softness and are tender when resting and lie back on them, It will not cause back pain, in addition they are the temperature change resistant in different seasons.  In summer they do not pass heat and in winter they resist cold.
While machine made carpets lack this property.
Another feature is the kind of fibers have been used in hand made Persian rugs such as wool, silk and cotton as raw materials. Furthermore they produce no
 static electricity.

Other attractions of handmade carpets are their variety in terms of design and color that satisfies any style and taste.  According to opinion of carpet experts, the price of a carpet more depends on design and color, yarn, fiber, pile and to what extent they have been knotted fine or thick. The artistic value of a Persian rug depends upon design, colors and the harmony of colors.

Classification of Handmade Carpets according  to Fiber Type:

 Wool rug:
The whole wool carpet is a carpet that its weft, warp and pile is Wool.  Characteristics of these type of handmade rugs are their thick knot.  Completely wool
Handmade carpets are cheaper than other types of rugs because of lack of elegance in their texture.  But we can say the pros of these rugs are factors like
High durability and resistance, irreversibility of the piles and high moisture absorption power.

Full silk carpet:
The whole silk carpet as its name implies is a rug that its weft, warp and piles are completely silk.

This handmade carpet has very high artistic value and price.
one of the most important reasons is because
their texture and knots are very delicate. they are very durable despite their delicacy and softness
And they are very easy to clean against stains, if stains
dropped on your silk carpet, just bring a wet rag and shampoo, then it disappears with a few wipes on the carpet.

 Carpet with Silk accent:
This rug is a carpet that its warp is made of wool but flowers and leaves in their design has been made of silk.
The rest of the pile is woven by wool.  this kind of
Handmade rug is at a lower price than silk rugs
But it is good to know that these rugs are valuable.
They can easily compete with whole silk rugs.

Carpet with wool warp
The wool warp rug is actually the rug that its warp is wool, whereas its piles can  be from other materials.

Silk backdrop rug

Silk backdrop carpet is a carpet that is made of wool but the backdrop area is woven from silk.

Classification of handmade Persian rugs according  to texture or knot:

It’s beneficial to know that the elegance of a carpet depends on the type of knots used in the texture.  There are generally two types of knots in the Persian handmade carpets which include
1. Turkish knot
2. Persian knot

Turkish knot:
Double-knot or Turkish knot is a kind of knotting in handmade rugs,  It was primarily common for weavers in Tabriz city but today it is also common in other areas and it is used almost everywhere in Iran.
The method is such that both ends of the pile are knotted.

Since this method takes a lot of time the weavers usually use it for carpet weaving with fine textures and delicate designs with a variety of colors.

Other features that this type of knot provides in rug is that it makes the rugs sturdy, in addition
this strength makes the carpet to become shabby in a long period of time.
It also provides the possiblity for the carpet piles to be cut to look like velvet.
It should be noted that in this method, the possibility of cheatting in knotting is not possible.

Persian knot:
Persian knots lead to wool carpets that are thick and yuck . It is a single-knot type , meaning that only one
side of the pile is tied and the other side is free.
Because of the loose warp in this method weavers have to hit the combs with more pressure and
heavier to force piles to be twisted in each other and tighten.  One of the disadvantages of carpets made
With the Persian knot is that they become shabby more easily over time.
These knots cannot be used for fine carpet textures
Because pile wool is thick and it can not be used in delicate design texture.  These Persian rugs are cheaper and affordable.

Evaluation of Handmade Persian Rugs Quality:

 Design and size of carpet:
One of the things to consider for buying a handmade Persian rugs is dimensions.
You may know that few centimeters of difference in the dimensions of a handmade carpet in
The upper and lower parts of it are usually normal. But It should be noted that the difference of more than a few centimeters is not allowed and it is a defect.  To determine the symmetry of a hand woven Persian rug design you can fold the rug from the middle of it.  Other than that It should be carefully checked all designs on the Persian rug that all of them must be complete. Unfinished designs are also a defect.

Inspection of a Persian rug in natural light:

Our other suggested solution to find out the quality of a Persian rug is to inspect and see the rugs from
different viewpoints and in natural light.  it is important to Know the color of the carpet seems darker when you look at it in direction of its piles than
 the opposite direction.

If you look at Persian rug in the opposite direction of its piles it is easier to check out the design.
To inspect the color and see if it is natural and rich
check the color of piles at roots and compare them with their surface color. They must be the same color and they must not differ. Any color difference between the end and the surface of the pile means that the piles have been colored by chemical inks. To ensure about it you can wipe a piece of damp cloth on the surface and see if it is colored or not.

Check the quality of handmade Persian rug piles:

Before buying a rug inspect the pile quality.  Carpet piles should be stiff, shiny
and flexible but it is useful to know that the rugs
With soft piles are less durable and absorb dusty and not easily cleaned in comparison with rugs with tougher piles.

Evaluate if your rug has been repaired or mended against wearing or rotting

As a buyer of carpets you should always know that mended rug is detectable by looking at the back of you rug.
These carpets are recognizable. Unusually parts of the carpet has been mended or repaired are rough and sturdier than the rest. You can see needle trace at the back of carpet if you see it meticulously.

If you suspect that the carpet is rotten, You can fold it up. if it’s rotten you can hear the sound of breaking.

Check the pile height of rug

The height of the piles in different parts of the carpet should be the same. To check it, it is the best to run  the carpet piles with your hand to see if there are any irregularities. You might think that the only reason of irregularity is the finishing of rug. But after the purchase and with a rough  wash of carpet,
 This problem can also occur.

Check the back of rug to see the carpet ID and Kpsi (knots per square inch)

So far we have talked a lot of about the importance of checking the back of the carpet.

 But again we emphasize it because you can find many things from back of the carpet such as  ;

the carpet texture
Carpet ID
Number of knots or Kpsi
Quality of weaving

Check the color dissimilarity of the rug

Sometimes the color of the upper part of the carpet may be different from the lower part of it. The color may be lighter or stronger.
The color difference is called double color rug. This
defect is essential. It greatly reduces the price of the carpet.
It is best to carefully check the carpet before buying under the light.

Carpet Selection Guide for Decoration:

Follow the principles required in choosing the right rug for your decoration. In addition that it shows your taste furthermore it makes your home more beautiful and more attractive.
To choose your dream carpet for your home , you have to evaluate the rug color, texture , material and design.
In the following here are some things to note:

1-  Do not use fine, silky, old and antique carpets that are less durable and vulnerable and also light color carpets in your living room, dining room and kids room.
You can use these rugs in places like the guest room, bedroom , library and generally low busy rooms.

2- Aesthetically, It is better not to use large rugs in front of sofa and furniture that you have to put part of it under your furniture. It is better to choose Persian rugs that its size fits your free area in front of your sofa or furniture.

3- In contrary to what I said above, It is better to choose large rugs in your dining room to completely cover all the space of your dining table and chairs around it.
Perfect size of rug for dining room is the carpet that its edges comes out of dining table chairs about 60 to 70 centimeters on each side.

4-  The design of the carpet should be compatible with the type of room where it is. for example Medallion design rugs are suitable for reception halls or guest room and venues its Medallion is in full view.

In my opinion rugs with flower designs and geometric designs are suitable for homes and places with wooden embroidered furniture.

While rugs with geometric designs or branch designs are more suitable for apartments and rooms with modern furniture.

5- Carpets with Afshan design are also suitable for dining room, guest room,  living rooms and libraries.
They provide a beautiful space in these environments.

6- If you need a fine and artistic rug to show your home like a flower garden you can choose rugs
With Medallion designs, hunting grounds, fish or Harris.  But if you want a rug to evoke you rural villages and nomadic areas
It is better to have carpets with human and animal figures , flower designs , trees designs , trees and so on.

For modern homes and sport design you can choose from Kheshti design , Paisley design or Minakhani design.
