Yazd city
The province of Yazd is bordered by Semnan city and desert and Isfahan city. with an area of about 128811 km2 is surrounded by Khorasan Razavi , Kerman and Fars to the east, and Isfahan to the west. This province is one of the centers of carpet weaving in Iran that its people have long been interested in handicraft and textile industries. especially Zilobafi and carpet weaving and scarf weaving.
Yazd rug weaving history
Today, large and small textile and carpet weaving workshops are held in different parts of Yazd province. In the city of Yazd, carpets are made of Kashan and Isfahan styles of Medallion and Paisley. Abarkouh, Ardakan, Bafgh, Taft, Khatam (Herat), Sadough (Ashkids), Tabas, Mehriz, Meybod, and Yazd are the cities of this province. The city of Yazd is the center of the province and its distance to Tehran is 689 km. The city is at 31 degrees 53 minutes north latitude and 54 degrees 25 minutes east longitude and is 1222 meters above sea level. Yazd is bounded on the north by Shakir and Ardakan city, on the east by Bafgh city, on the south by Mehriz city in Taft, and on the west by the Saduq region. There are numerous mountains surrounding the city.
The highest of which is 3600 meters above sea level. Yazd’s climate is dry and its rainfall is low. Josa Qabarbaru, who traveled to Iran during the “Ozone Hassan” period, writes about Yazd (Ravandi):
“People are fascinated by the textiles and the weaving of various silk fabrics and … These fabrics are exported to India and China, Machin and Khata and part of them to Russia and Turkey … “. As mentioned above, handicrafts, especially fabric weaving and carpet weaving, are among the important and old occupations of Yazd people. Fabric weaving, called handmade weaving, has long been prevalent in this area and among most families, and weaving has become widespread over the past century.
Some of the features of Yazd Carpet:
Design and motifs: In the past, the carpet of Yazd was woven with Herati and Chahar Khaneh motif. but after the introduction of Kerman carpet designs their rugs became more diverse and today the designs are affected by Isfahan, Kerman and Kashan designs. Sardarejangal and Lalehyazdi motifs are Yazd’s most famous designs.
Raw Materials and Textures:
Most of the wool consumed in carpet weaving comes from Isfahan city or Tehran market. The loom in this area is vertical and weavers weave the rug with an asymmetric knot and two wefts.
The number of knots in carpets in Yazd is 25 to 40 knots per 6.5 cm.
Color:
Yazd carpet is mostly weaved in red, cream, navy, blue, and sometimes cinnamon color and brown.
Over the last two or three decades, carpet dyeing has followed a general policy of caring for carpet weaving stature in the province. They use herbal and industrial dyes.
